What is SOcialization and why is it important?
You may be eager to teach your puppy all the basics such as sit, down, and leash walking – and those are all important skills! – but puppyhood provides us with an important window of opportunity to shape your pup’s personality and behavior for the rest of their life through socialization.
The first four months of a dog’s life are known as the “critical socialization period”. By exposing a puppy to our modern, human world in a strategic way, we can help them feel confident and act appropriately. A puppy learns what is normal and safe, and what to do in all the different environments their owner brings them into. Dogs that are under-socialized during this time can develop behavior issues, due to fear or over-excitement when around novel things they were not exposed to when they were young.

When should I start training my puppy?
Focused Fido believes training starts from day one! Puppies are smart and they quickly pick up on your habits, emotions, and lifestyle. By keeping to a consistent schedule and reinforcing their good behaviors, you lay the foundation for a balanced, healthy companion.
How do I start Potty training my puppy?
Focused Fido’s 4 steps to potty training success:
Supervision: limit your pup’s space using gates, crates, and tethers when you aren’t able to keep your eye on them. this will prevent accidents
Create a schedule for trips outside to potty: pups under 16 weeks of age typically will need to potty upon waking, after eating/drinking, and after about 20-30 minutes of play/exercise. “when in doubt, take them out!
Cleaning up an accident: Be sure to use an enzyme-based cleaner such as HWF Oxy cleaner or Eco 88 pet stain & odor cleaner
Create a “puppy zone” for times you’ll need to leave your new pup unsupervised such as during the work day or running errands. Using a playpen and crate, set up a safe space your puppy can exercise, and have an appropriate place to potty, and nap while you are not supervising.
Help! How do I stop my puppy from nipping and biting me?
Puppy biting is a common and natural activity for young dogs, it is their way of interacting and exploring the world. However, it can be a not so fun event for you! Ignoring biting is a bad idea because it is self-reinforcing, reacting negatively and punishing biting is also considered reinforcing and can escalate puppy biting in a bad way.
Redirecting your new puppy to a chew item, a plush toy, or a fun tug toy is a great technique to implement from day one in their new home. Check out our blog post all about “puppy biting”

When can we start?
Puppies can start at 8-10 weeks of age.
Vaccinations
Puppies under 16 weeks of age are required to have: 2 doses of parvovirus and distemper. 1 dose of bordetella.
Puppies over 16 weeks old need to be current on parvovirus, distemper, rabies, and bordetella.
